Job Description
- To undertake a variety of tasks which results in the operation of the establishment's kitchen.
- To prepare and cook, nutritionally balanced and appetising meals for the customers.
- The accountabilities of this flexible role may alter from time to time in order to meet the needs of the business/client, but accountabilities will include (or be equivalent in nature to) those listed below:
- Undertake the preparation, cooking and serving of meals as per menu and rota. Help with the provision of hot drinks at morning and afternoon breaks. Cater for special events such as birthdays, small buffets for functions, Christmas etc.
- Operate and keep tools and equipment in a clean and serviceable condition, and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Where repairs are necessary inform the manager.
- Keep accurate records, such as , stock control, temperature records etc.
- Responsible for ordering dry and frozen goods within budget. Purchase ingredients and supplies vial local supermarkets keeping within budget.
- Ensure that the kitchen area is maintained to a standard that promotes a high standard of safety, cleanliness and efficiency (complies with Food Hygiene regulations. Responsible for the cleanliness of catering areas.
- On a day to day basis ensure that all requirements in respect of Health, Safety and Hygiene are met including the safety of the customers. Monitor risk and be involved in risk management. Inform the Manager of any hazards arising in the kitchen.
- Liaise with other staff to monitor and review the needs of customers. Prepare menus along with customers and staff, taking into account any special dietary requirements or nutritional needs.
- Interpret straightforward information and situations e.g instructions describing tasks.
- Basic communication and interpersonal skills (including use of tact) in order to take messages or to make resource booking etc. Provide training to customers in how to plan and cook meals. Encourage the customers to help cook in the kitchen when appropriate.
- Responsible for the day to day maintenance of equipment, such as, cookers, refrigerators etc and stock control of a limited range of supplies.
- Remain up to date and compliant with all relevant legislation, organisational procedures, policies and professional codes of conduct in order to uphold standards of best practice.
- Supports equality and diversity and respect customers, clients and others members of staff regardless of gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion or ethnic origin.
- The job requires the post holder to use concentrated sensory attention for a period of 1-2 hours in order to prepare and cook food and maintain the kitchen.
- The role will include ongoing physical effort for lifting or carrying, pushing or pulling items of light weight e.g. carrying shopping, carrying saucepans etc.
- Due to the nature of this role the work involves considerable exposure to hazardous working conditions, due to working in a kitchen. Literacy and numeracy sufficient to follow procedures for a range of tasks.
- Knowledge of ordering, costing and stock control.
- Knowledge of effective cooking techniques and healthy, nutritious recipes.
- Knowledge of cleaning schedules and their implementation.
- Awareness of Health and Safety issues, including risk assessment.
- 3 GCSEs with A-C passes including Maths and English or equivalent or demonstrable equivalent experience.
- Recognised Food Handling and Food hygiene qualification.
- Basic Food Hygiene certificate.
